The other double bonds are deduced from the biodiesel first one by adding 3 (this is the most frequent structure, non-conjugated fatty acids, but sometimes by adding 2, these double bonds are said conjugated). Thus, linoleic acid or cis-9, cis-12-octadecadienoic biodiesel acid is also named in the shorthand nomenclature 18:2 (n-6). This compound has 18 carbon atoms, 2 double bonds and 6 carbon atoms from the last double bond to the terminal methyl group. In biodiesel the old literature it was designated 18:2w6. 18-6=12, 12-3=9, hence D9,12. The International Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature agreed to the first form of this nomenclature because of its interest in describing the fatty acid metabolism.
