The sphingomyelins are synthesized by the transfer of phosphorylcholine from phosphatidylcholine to a ceramide in a reaction catalyzed by sphingomyelin synthase. There are at least 4 related disorders identified as Niemann-Pick disease Type A and B (both of which result from defects irritable bowel syndrome in acid sphingomyelinase), Type C1 and a related C2 and Type D. Types C1, C2 and D do not result irritable bowel syndrome from defects in acid sphingomyelinase. Glycosphingolipids, or glycolipids, are composed of a ceramide backbone with a wide variety of carbohydrate groups (mono- or oligosaccharides) attached to carbon 1 of sphingosine.
